FAQ
  • Why Moccamaster?
Because Moccamaster has set the global benchmark for excellence in coffee brewing around the world. Brewers and grinders are handmade, with quality parts, in the heart of The Netherlands, and every brewer is tested live (water/electric) before shipping. It also offers an industry leading 5-year Limited Warranty. Moccamaster Brewers meet strict brewing guidelines set forth by the ECBC (European Coffee Brewing Centre), SCA (Specialty Coffee Association), these guidelines include: -Brew at the correct temperature (92°– 96°) with a copper boiling element which is important for coffee soluble extraction. -Steep coffee grounds for the right amount of time (less than 6 minutes to brew full cycle) via a cone-shaped brew-basket (for < 1.8 liter brewers) -Hold brewed coffee at the correct temperature, without burning (80°– 85°) using a unique, independent hot-plate element, auto-shut-off after 100 minutes or via a thermal carafe are made with durable metal housing, and where plastics are used, they are BPA/BPS/BPF and Phthalate FREE Moccamaster brewers use a copper boiling element which allows for consistent water temperature control (copper is antibacterial in function). They are simple to use, with a quiet brew process. They also are energy efficient, timeless in design, long-lasting, reliable, cleanable, recyclable and sustainable!
  • What are the differences between Moccamaster brewer models?
Volume: 10-oz (Cup-one), 1-liter (32oz/8-cup), 1.25-liter (40oz/10-cup), 1.8-liter (60/15-cup) Body: K Series: rectangular tower housing, C Series: cylindrical/round tower housing Carafe: Thermal Carafe (without hot-plate) or Glass Carafe (with hot-plate) Brew-Basket: Manual-adjust drip-stop, Automatic drip-stop, No drip-stop Auto-off power switch: Glass carafe models switch off at 100 minutes, Cup-One models immediately switch off after brewing. There isn’t a need for an AO power switch on Thermal Carafe models because the copper boiling element automatically turns off via the float switch, after water drains from the water reservoir. The power switch light remains on, but only indicates it’s ready, and doesn’t draw any power to the element.
  • Do all models produce the same quality coffee?
Yes! Moccamaster brewers include different colors, styles and volumes, but all produce to a Gold Cup Standard (ECBC/SCA).
  • Where is Moccamaster sold?
Moccamaster products can be found at many upscale boutique retailers throughout France, Spain and Portugal, as well as specialty coffee stores, coffee roasters or at www.moccamasterbycalita.com. Moccamasters are available around the globe, especially in the Nordic region where coffee consumption is the greatest (per capita) in the world. They demand quality in the cup, they buy Moccamaster!
  • What is essential to brew the golden cup of coffee?
Coffee bean quality, grind, fresh water quality and formula are all factors in brewing the gold cup, but ultimately, it’s the brewing process that plays the all-important final role!
  • Does Coffee Grind size make a difference?
Brewing parameters are important, however grind is also important. Consistent and equal grind particulate size will ensure your coffee-to-water contact time is producing an even homogeneous extraction and a well balanced gold cup. Moccamaster recommends a medium (drip) grind particulate size, following the water-coffee ratio below. Too fine a grind may cause an over-flow of the brew-basket and/or an over-extracted bitter tasting outcome and too course a grind may under-extract and cause a flavorless result.
  • What about water?
If it tastes good to drink, it’ll make good coffee. If you wouldn’t drink it, then don’t brew with it! We recommend fresh tap water if it tastes good, otherwise filtered or bottled water is fine too. We do not recommend the use of reverse osmosis filtered water or distilled water.
  • What does Moccamaster formula recommend?
  • What is Coffee Bloom?
Moccamaster brewers are scientifically designed to brew with an ultra-precise, pre-immersion drip-style system, which creates a natural pulse action process. As water, heated to the proper temperature, contacts the coffee grounds, a gas is released, causing the “coffee bloom”, which is the flavor being released from the coffee grounds. The pulse action can easily be viewed through the clear water reservoir and glass transfer tube. While the coffee bloom can be witnessed when peaking under the brew-basket lid near the beginning of the brew process, we don’t recommend removing the brew-basket lid as it will release heat, and could potential cause a burn, compromising your safety.
  • Is there a difference in filters?
Moccamaster oxygen whitened filters are the perfect choice for clean, crisp, unflavored coffee. Brown unbleached filters may leave a “cardboard” taste in your coffee, and permanent wire-mesh type filters can clog with coffee oils quickly, overflowing the brew-basket and/or steeping the coffee too long, potentially resulting in over extracted bitter tasting coffee.
  • Why is there water remaining in my brewer once the brew cycle is complete?
Moccamaster doesn’t use pumps to push the water through, It’s the natural boiling process for this type of brewing system that creates the flow of water up and through to the brew-basket. Therefore, it is normal to have a few ounces of water remain in the boiling element. This is fine if you brew every few days, but if you brew every couple week, take extended vacation or are in a freezing environment, we recommend emptying the remaining small amount of water by removing the parts and turning your brewer upside down over the sink.
  • Why descale and clean? What is the recommended timetable?
Moccamaster brewers should last a lifetime, when cleaned and descaled properly! As with all coffee brewers, your Moccamaster should be descaled (removal of calcium/lime deposits-buildup) and cleaned (removing water residue/coffee oils) in order to maintain proper performance and great tasting coffee. For descaling and cleaning your brewer we recommend the following brands: -The Universal Descaler Durgol -The Clean Drop Other brands may harm the copper boiling element, potentially resulting in an unpleasant metallic after-taste. We don’t recommend vinegar, because it rarely descales sufficiently and may leave an after-taste. Moccamaster recommends you clean and descale your brewer every 100 brew cycles. This can be easily remembered when you buy a box of 100ct filters.
  • Why are there so many parts?
Removable parts are essential for long-term maintenance and replacement.
  • Do you sell Accessories and Replacement Parts separately?
Yes, please contact us for any spare part requests.
